One of our longest serving members of staff is Rhys Hall, Across’ Radio Manager. His qualifications include B.Sc.(Hons), Dip. Ed., Associate in Theology, Missionary Training Course (2-yrs, WEC), Christian Radio Training Course (Daystar Uni.). Rhys’ job function is to envision, establish and direct the Radio project which includes: (a) Christian and educational radio program development and supply to a network of stations; (b) distribution of teacher and family training courses on digital audio players to schools and communities; (c) Christian video development and screening. Rhys Hall is based in Yei, Southern Sudan and has served Across since 1984. His passion is to foster among Southern Sudanese a Biblical faith and lifestyle, improved skills for healthy living, and hope for the future. His other social roles are: Ugandan Refugee Education Coordinator (1983-86); founder of Sudan Literature Centre (1988-2001); Media Co-ordinator (2005-6); IT support to SLC & Radio projects (1988-2009); Supervisor Lasu Refugee Settlement Education sector (2009). He is happily married to Rhondda.
Founded in 1972 by four mission societies (AIM, SUM, SIM, and MAF), Across has since gone through a number of transitions in response to the changing conditions in South Sudan and partners outside Sudan. Ever since, many of the Across staff have had a calling to serve the people of South Sudan. Across’ continuous service for 43 years has given us a wonderful heritage in the nation.
Integrated Response Program is being implemented in two refugee camps of (Lasu, Gorom) and urban refugees in Juba town with integrated program interventions. The intervention sectors are education, health and HIV, livelihood, WASH, community services and protection to support the refugees achieve self-reliance. The refugees in the two camps of Gorom and Lasu are from Ethiopia (from Gambella) and from Congo respectively. The urban refugees are drawn from other different countries.
Construction of schools for the refugee community so that children get access to education. Currently there are three primary and one secondary school constructed and providing services to 3,242 students in primary schools including pre-school and 364 students in secondary schools.
There are also pre-schools and adult literacy where teachers are assigned
Recruitment, training and deployment of teachers, so far 105 teachers (25 female) were recruited, trained and deployed to serve in those schools. Among the teachers 81 are from refugees and 24 teachers are from host community.
Provision of accommodations for teachers serving the refugee community
Provision of scholastic materials and school uniforms to children from refugee community. in addition, in some cases, to school fees are covered in private schools
Establishments of PTA (Parent and Teachers Association) and training of the same. Accordingly, there are 40 PTA members running the schools management
Assisting students post primary institutions
Conducting awareness campaigns for girl child education
Constructing children friendly spaces for playing games and provision of playing equipment and materials
Supporting examination fees for candidates of primary and secondary senior candidates
Engaging students in different social clubs and supporting the same
